Tuesday, July 18, 2006, Today, the United States Congress is rushing to
consider resolutions concerning the escalation of violence in the
Middle East. These resolutions are expected to back Israel’s
actions in Gaza and Lebanon with unconditional support. Once again,
Congress is producing one-sided resolutions failing to hold Israel
accountable for breaching international law with its collective
punishment against civilian populations. Although these resolutions are
non-binding, their passage will add to President Bush’s message
that Israel will continue to receive unconditional American support for
its military rampage. Last night, Armed Services Chairman John Warner
(R-VA) blocked the Senate vote because the resolution failed to mention
the need for America to act as an honest broker in the Middle East and
further neglected to mention the 25,000 Americans caught in middle of
Israel’s siege of Lebanon. Contact your Members of Congress
immediately about today’s votes on these resolutions. Because of
the timely nature of these votes, please call your congressional
representatives to register your opinion on the resolutions and your
feelings about the escalation of violence in the Middle East. Also,
after you have called your two senators and your representative in the
House, please contact Senator Warner’s office to thank him for his
actions last night at (202) 224-2033.
